COLUMBIA, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – An Aiken County attorney has been arrested on seven charges related to the sexual exploitation of minors, according to the Aiken County Attorney General’s Office.
In a news release sent Wednesday, city officials said 54-year-old William Daniel Mayes was arrested Tuesday.
According to officials, investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force made the arrest.
The release states that investigators received a CyberTipline report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which led them to Mayes.
Investigators say Mayes recorded an individual without their consent and possessed files containing child sexual abuse material.
The release states Mayes is charged with five counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of voyeurism.
Sexual exploitation of a minor is a crime punishable by up to ten years in prison per charge. Voyeurism is a criminal offense punishable by up to three years in prison for the first offense per charge.
According to the press release, the case will be prosecuted by the Public Prosecution Service.
