Harris was forced to fight Biden-caused fires late in the election — but will it cost her?

Less than a week after the election, Kamala Harris is spending her day cleaning up President Biden’s mess.

Biden waded into the controversy over Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in the least helpful way imaginable. He called Trump’s supporters “trash” and now the administration is trying to backtrack on what he said.

At Harris’ alma mater, Howard University, in Washington, DC, I spoke with current students.

They were divided over what impact, if any, Biden’s comments would have on the race.

Antoine, a first-generation American from Turks and Caicos, will be voting for the first time.

“I support President Biden,” he said.

“I am a supporter of the Democratic Party. I think there’s probably some truth to what he said, but I wish he hadn’t said that because it goes against the narrative that we’re trying to emphasize that the Democratic Party is a celebration of love, community and acceptance of all people. So we don’t judge you because you are a Trump supporter.”

Keelan is still unsure who he will vote for, but believes Biden’s comments are emblematic of why he was right to step aside as the nominee.

“You could say that these kinds of moves are the reason why Kamala is running and not Biden,” he said, “because that was not thought through, that is not a chess move. There is validity in having emotions, but that doesn’t mean your emotions should dictate how you move.”

Kianna Thomas is from Massachusetts and is of Haitian descent.

She does not believe Biden’s comments will affect the way people vote, but believes it shows a deterioration in political rhetoric in the United States.

“I don’t know if it will necessarily change the outcome, but I think it certainly contributes to the way politics has changed in the United States and the last two elections, where it’s these very name-calling and rhetoric that are hurtful . she said.

Biden is no longer the candidate, so the impact of his comments on voters may be less pronounced than when Hilary Clinton described “at least half” of Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables.”

But it certainly doesn’t help that Harris has to put out fires started by her own boss.
