The Winnipeg encampment was cleared after a fire

An encampment along the Assiniboine River was cleared Monday after a fire.

According to the City of Winnipeg, crews have removed debris left behind by a fire at the site near the Granite Curling Club. It is noted that the encampment was not closed and no residents were displaced.

The city added that it has a standardized process for responding to homeless encampments, including regular welfare checks from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. She notes that she does not disrupt encampments unless there is a risk to public safety.

Winnipeg said it is referring all reports of active camps to support agencies who are working with residents to find alternative accommodations. The city does not dismantle an encampment until it is confirmed to be abandoned.
