‘Bring change by 2026’: Amit Shah targets cross-border infiltration in West Bengal

Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said peace in West Bengal can only be ensured by stopping cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh. Speaking at a public meeting at Petrapole land port along the India-Bangladesh border, Shah underscored the Bharatiya Janata Party’s commitment to ending illegal immigration if it comes to power in the state after the 2026 parliamentary elections.

“Infiltration must stop to bring peace to Bengal,” Shah noted, urging residents to usher in political change by 2026. He criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and linked corruption issues and unchecked immigration to lack of governance in the state.

Speaking about the importance of land ports, Shah said, “Land ports are crucial for improving connectivity and trade relations between countries. However, when legal avenues for freedom of movement are restricted, illegal immigration takes over, hindering peace.” He asserted that the BJP government would ensure that infiltration is curbed and law and order is restored.

The Home Minister inaugurated a new passenger terminal building and a new cargo gate at Petrapole Port, highlighting the role of the port in strengthening trade ties between India and Bangladesh. The Petrapole-Benapole route is a vital trade corridor, facilitating significant trade between the two countries.

Shah’s comments come amid the BJP’s ongoing efforts to consolidate support in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 elections, positioning cross-border infiltration and national security as key electoral issues.
