NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Nearly a thousand doctors are threatening a strike at four New York City hospitals.
Physician members of Doctors Council – Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the union representing thousands of primary care physicians in New York City, have given NYC Health + Hospitals and its private sector affiliates 10 days notice that they could walk out on January 1. 13 at Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx, Queens Hospital Center and South Brooklyn Health.
The unionized doctors complain that they have been working without a contract for four months.
They are demanding wage increases and an end to what they call an underemployment crisis.
“We are on the front lines of healthcare every day, working tirelessly to provide the best possible care to our communities,” says Dr. Joplin Steinweiss, a primary care physician at Jacobi. “But H+H and its subsidiaries are failing to offer a contract that addresses the rising cost of living, the long hours we work, and the increasing stress and burnout we face as our hospitals struggle to recruit and retain qualified physicians. Our communities will continue to face a serious shortage of physicians, and patients will ultimately bear the brunt of the system’s failure.”
Hospital management told Eyewitness News they hope everyone at the bargaining table works together to prevent a strike.
“We appreciate physicians who serve patients at NYC Health + Hospitals every day,” New York City Health + Hospitals said in a statement. “We continue to encourage all involved parties to work together at the bargaining table to avoid a strike and ensure quality care for our patients remains uninterrupted.”
