Modern retail zone with 40 stores opens near IGP in Lucknow

Minister AK Sharma inaugurated Lucknow’s Organized Vending Zone with 40 shops to streamline street vending, improve cleanliness and improve public experience.

Urban Development Minister AK Sharma on Thursday inaugurated Lucknow’s organized retail zone near Indira Gandhi Pratishthan (IGP). The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has constructed the retail zone with 40 shops at a cost of ₹1.9 crore to streamline street vending and promote cleanliness.

The sales area has modern amenities, such as tiled floors, a music system and seating areas with tables and benches. All 40 stores have been designed with a uniform theme and color to enhance the visual appeal of the area.

LMC officials allocated 38 stores to vendors identified during a 2023 survey, while reserving two for future allocation in case of objections or missed claims. Sanjay Yadav, an LMC official, stated that vendors paid a refundable deposit of €1.50 ₹50,000, along with a monthly rent of ₹5,000, to secure their spaces.

Municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh said the initiative is part of a broader plan to streamline retail operations in the city. “We are working to identify more locations to create designated retail zones with improved facilities,” he said.

An LMC official said the vending zone aims to eliminate the chaos caused by haphazardly placed stalls that previously led to littering and traffic disruption. “This project will bring vendors to a designated, orderly space, ensuring better cleanliness and management,” he added.

The primary goal of the project is to organize vendors while improving the shopping experience for the public. The vending area provides a structured layout that eliminates the clutter and disorder typically associated with street vending areas.

Key officials including Mayor Sushma Kharakwal, Municipal Commissioner Inderjit Singh, Additional Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Srivastava and others were present during the inauguration.
