One dead in fire in Scarborough

One man has died following a house fire in Scarborough, while an elderly woman was seriously injured in a separate fire in Toronto.

Toronto police said on social media site X that officers were called to Birchmount Rd. and Hwy. 401 at 2:39 am for a ‘major house fire’.

Police said a man was pulled from the fire by Toronto firefighters and two people – a man and a woman – were taken to hospital.

A man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of the fire, which has been extinguished, is not yet known.

In a separate incident on Christmas Eve, police say officers were called at 10:35 p.m. to reports of a large fire coming from an apartment in the Yonge St. And Davisville Ave area.

Police said a female victim in her 80s was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The building was partially evacuated.
