Warrap Information Minister William Wol Mayom has urged members of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) to take advantage of every training opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge.
Mayom expressed his sentiments on Wednesday during a one-day workshop organized by UJOSS, with financial support from the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), in Kuajok, the capital of Warrap state.
The training, which included 25 participants from the provinces, aimed to train journalists in the use of digital tools to improve the dissemination of information.
Mayom appreciated UJOSS and NPA for initiating the workshop, which he said helped journalists ease their work in the digital world.
“It is our desire and responsibility as the Ministry of Information to have qualified personnel like you, and due to the gap we have in this economic hardship, we are not able to provide this kind of training. However, with the support of our partners and UJOSS, we have been able to organize more than four training sessions in Warrap State,” he stated.
“I urge journalists to acquire knowledge because training opportunities are scarce. Be focused, participate fully and take away something useful,” he said.
Lead Facilitator Anthony Yol urged journalists to enhance their knowledge and leverage mobile journalism to improve information services to the people of Warrap State.
“Mobile or citizen journalism is the modern way of reporting and 90% of journalists worldwide resort to it. That is why we have organized this training to get you on board,” he said.
One of the journalists in the training, Adut William Akeen, said she benefited from this and could do her job more effectively.
“I have benefited from building citizen knowledge. Mobile journalism is great when it comes to reporting in a democratic society. I learned fact checking, investigative journalism techniques, ethics in journalism, responsibility, truth telling and honesty,” she said.
“This is a very important training. I will use what I have acquired in my workplace because what is unique is the knowledge about video photography. It is very essential and I am a news broadcaster. I learned a lot of skills there,” said Akol Nicolas Madut.
Deng Angok said: “I learned about citizen journalism, online media and many topics related to journalism skills. These will help me enormously and I am happy that I have acquired the knowledge and skills to better do my job at the radio station.”
