The Owensboro-Daviess County Christmas Parade Association has announced this year’s grand marshal, honorary marshal and special guest. The parade will take place on November 23 under the slogan “Christmas in vintage style”. The organization is also still accepting float applications, at discounted rates until midnight on October 31.

The grand marshal of the 2024 parade is Brian Smith, who has spent most of his adult life in Southern California with his wife, Janice. They eventually moved to Owensboro, and Brian began his career managing corporate high-rises, including tenants such as Sony Pictures and Nestle.

In 2005, the couple fell in love with Owensboro and purchased Diamond Lake Resort, turning it into a popular camping destination.

Smith will drive to the parade in his own 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan, the same one he drove in the Great Race from Owensboro to New England last summer. Navigator Scott Howard will once again ride alongside him in the classic car.

“This is the first time I have felt so honored to be named grand marshal of any parade,” Smith said. “The Christmas Parade is one of the largest events in the tri-state area. I am very humble.”

The commission also awarded Girls Inc. title of honorary Grand Marshal. The nonprofit organization’s executive director, Tish Correa Osborne, said, “The Christmas Parade is a highlight for many of the girls we serve. They are just as excited as our board.”

The parade association also chose to honor a “Hometown Hero,” selecting prison guard Art Maglinger, who was recently named Kentucky Guard of the Year.

The parade will begin on November 23 at 4:30 p.m. at the corner of 2nd and Pearl streets. It is still possible to sign up for the parade.

“We invite all businesses and nonprofit organizations to get involved in the fun this year,” said Jane Head, Parade Association board member. “Low entry fees help us offset our costs.”

Nonprofit entries are $50 and commercial entries are $150 until midnight October 31. Sponsorship opportunities ranging from $250 to $1,000 are also available. Entry and sponsor information can be found at ChristmasParade.net.
